AP Exclusive: Book gives look at Giffords recovery (AP)

PHOENIX ? When President George H.W. Bush came to visit her in the hospital, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords could say only “Wow!” and another word she had been uttering frequently at the time, “chicken.”

Months later, when she was shown photos of famous people to see if she recognized faces, Giffords looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger and replied, more or less accurately: “Messin’ around. Babies.”

These and other details emerge in a new book written by Giffords and her husband that offers the most personal look yet at her slow, agonizing recovery after being shot in the head at point-blank range.

The memoir, titled “Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope,” describes Giffords’ efforts over the past 10 months to relearn how to walk and talk, and her painful discovery that six people were killed in the Jan. 8 attack outside a Tucson grocery store.

The Associated Press purchased an advance copy of the book, which is set for release Nov. 15.

The book is written from the perspective of her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly. But Giffords herself delivers the last chapter ? a single page of short sentences and phrases called “Gabby’s Voice” in which she says her goal is to get back to Congress.

“I will get stronger. I will return,” she wrote.

The book also reveals that the couple, who got married in 2007, was trying to have a baby. Giffords, 41, had undergone several rounds of fertility treatments in the last few years and had hoped to get pregnant early in 2011.

The book does not say whether Giffords will seek re-election next year. Kelly said the couple did not want to rush a decision. The deadline to formally declare her intentions is in May.

Aides have repeatedly emphasized that her focus is on recovery and that there is no timetable for making a decision about her political future. The Arizona Democrat was shot just days after being sworn in for her third term.

Giffords stunned colleagues by appearing on the House floor Aug. 1 to vote for the debt ceiling deal, but she has largely avoided the public eye, spending most of her time at TIRR Memorial Hermann, a rehabilitation center in Houston.

Some Democrats had hoped that Giffords would use her newfound fame to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Jon Kyl. But a Democratic strategist said Giffords has told Democrats in Arizona that she will not seek a Senate seat. The strategist spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss her plans.

In the memoir, Kelly recounts trying to tell his wife several times that she had been shot while meeting with constituents. But she didn’t fully understand until March 12.

Kelly asked Giffords if she remembered being shot, and she replied that she did, although he said it was hard to know if she really did. She described what she recalled with three words: “Shot. Shocked. Scary.”

Later that day, Kelly told her that six other people had been killed. Giffords was overcome with emotion and had trouble getting through her therapy.

It wasn’t until July, weeks after being released from the Houston hospital to Kelly’s home 25 miles away, that she learned who had been killed: a staff member, a federal judge, a 9-year-old girl and three other people Giffords did not know.

Twelve other people were wounded.

The suspect in the attack, Jared Lee Loughner, has pleaded not guilty to 49 charges. He is being forcibly medicated at a Missouri prison facility in an effort to make him mentally fit for trial.

When Kelly first saw Giffords after the shooting, she was in a coma, with her head partially shaved and bandaged, her face black and blue, and her body connected to tubes. He told her he loved her and assured her she would survive.

He said the darkest moment came later in Texas: Giffords realized she couldn’t talk and panicked. Her eyes widened with fear, and she cried uncontrollably.

The book also offers lighter moments, like when former President Bush and his wife, Barbara, visited the Texas hospital, and when Giffords recognized the picture of Schwarzenegger and made an apparent reference to the former California governor’s marital troubles.

Many people with brain injuries struggle to find the right words and repeat the same words and phrases. She eventually learned to talk again. Kelly said she was good at completing passages from the Constitution and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The book was co-written by Jeffrey Zaslow, who collaborated on Randy Pausch’s million-selling “The Last Lecture.”

Malt Whisky Yearbook 2011 by Ingvar Ronde | Malt Fascination

Yesterday I changed my ?currently reading? thingy to this book, and today I post a review. I knew I had started reading this some months ago, but I didn?t remember almost finishing it, but I did.

The Malt Whisky Yearbook is an annual release of interesting facts and figures on all malt whisky distilleries in Scotland and the rest of the world. The book always starts with a few articles on the current affairs in the whisky world followed by a rather complete description of how whisky distillation is done.

The good
Malt Whisky Yearbook 2011The book is a must have if you want to keep up to date with current affairs. All distilleries, new, planned and some closed one of which whisky is still available are in there. The articles are in depth and writting by some of the world?s leading experts on the subjects. The information on the distilleries itself is interesting to prepare for a whisky tasting or so, and the interviews with distillery managers are very interesting.

The bad
While the articles have loads of information, they are not always an accomodating read. Some of the articles are quite lengthy and at a few moments I thought they were a little repetitive. Also, the interviews with the people in the industry are a little monotonous. They use the same questionnaire time and again, with many answers being the same every time (people injured or killed in accidents is the worst fear of almost all distillery managers).

Conclusion
This is a book for the whisky enthousiasts. I think most people that are not really into it are scared off by the statistics and figures. For a fun read I?d recommend a different book, but if you?re up to it, GET THIS BOOK! Loads of information nicely bundled into a complete read. If I want to know something about a distillery, this is the book I pick up. Every time.

4 stars

The book is available at most whisky specialist retailers and online book sellers for about ?15.

After Hours Investing: Smartest 401(k) Book You'll Ever Read …

Dan Solin, author of The Smartest Investment Book You’ll Ever Read: The Simple, Stress-Free Way to Reach Your Investment Goals, has just applied his ability to simplify the often complex world of investing to the realm of the ubiquitous 401K plan. This latest book, Smartest 401(k) Book You’ll Ever Read: Maximize Your Retirement Savings…the Smart Way!, provides an excellent introduction to traps and pitfalls of the corporate retirement vehicle in just under 250 pages. That alone is a remarkable feat, given the often tome-like volumes of investment advice out there.

This is book that every new employee should read if their employer provides a 401k plan. Here’s why…

The pitfalls of 401k plans

It will come as no surprise to experienced investors, or those who take an active role in their 401k plans that the fees on some funds can be outright absurd. Solin spends quite a bit of time describing and making the case that exorbitant fees of some 401k plans make those plans worse than useless.

This book should open your eyes to why the concept of a tax deferred retirement plan is a wonderful thing, and why so many 401k plans fall short on implementation.

Fear and uncertainty about taxation

One of the weaker parts of the book is when Solin raises fears about the possibility that 401(k) contributions could become taxed in future. He points to cases in the past where congress has enacted retro-active tax hikes.

My biggest problem with this line of thinking is that he advocates using IRA and Roth IRA plans in place of 401k plans through much of the book, but there’s nothing to prevent congress from taxing those plans in the future either, so he offers this bit of fear and uncertainty about the future with no realy solution or action to minimize this risk.

Solutions

What makes this book so good is that Solin not only lays out the pitfalls and mine fields of many 401k plans, be he also provides some basic roadmaps for navigating around those trouble spots.

He offers practical solutions for what to do when the funds offered in your 401k plan are loaded with fees, or when they are perennial poor performers.

He offers simple ways to make better choices in plans with a mix of good and bad funds and he tells the reader which kinds of funds to avoid.

Conclusion

Solin often rails against high fees and poor disclosure of 401k plans. He has a very good point – for some 401k plans.

The problem is that his criticism of 401k plans is often presented as though it is true of all plans, and this is simply not the case. There actually are some very good 401k plans out there, and they are not all run by greedy leeches, trying to suck your financial future dry.

Some certainly are, but not all. I think this book should serve as a starting point to get those employees unfamiliar with the 401k deferred retirement plan more involved. It can give them the information to make the decision on their own about their individual 401k plan.

Aside from his view that the majority of 401k plans are run by greedy and incompetent fund managers he also exhibits the companion view that most investors are incapable of picking good funds regardless of whether it’s in an IRA or 401k.

This for me was one of the weaker aspects of the book, because it is coupled with his promotion of DFA index funds. The problem here is that he works for Dimensional Fund Advisors, so after pointing to conflicts of interest in 401k plans he then engages in his own conflict of interest by promoting his company’s index funds.

That doesn’t make it a bad book, but in my mind it keeps it from being a great book.

Despite its shortcomings,Smartest 401(k) Book You’ll Ever Read: Maximize Your Retirement Savings…the Smart Way!is a recommended read for anyone who is new to the 401k world, or who just wants to get a better handle on how to get the most out of their 401k plan the right way.

Book Review: Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuck | Ed Rivis

I read Crush It! by multi-Millionare social media success story Gary Vaynerchuck a while back.

It?s a quick read, and yet contains loads of great ideas and takeaway tactics so I made the following notes, and thought I?d share them with you. You might find these useful.

First of all, the central message of the book is this?

?Any business which doesn?t embrace social media will be dead on their feet over the next few years.?

Now I can?t see that happening for every business.

For example my local plumber is busy, but doesn?t have a blog or Twitter or Facebook account. And I can?t see his lack of ?social media savvy? affecting his business for quite a long time.

However, I do totally agree with this in respect of businesses that find work based on reputation, trust and authority. Especially professional service providers, like consultants, advisers and trainers, who can all use social media to generate high quality sales leads and expand their reputation and influence.

On page 24 Gary talks about the best types of content to share with your social media subscribers and followers?

?Storytelling is by far the most underrated skill in business.?

And on page 51 he has a great list of ways to generate ideas for social media content. I?ve tweaked them slightly ? check out the book to see the original list.

Here they are?

  • Tell me everything about what you offer the marketplace that makes it unique.
  • Tell me a story that makes me care about your product or service as much as you do.
  • Tell me about interesting conversations and events that happened recently.
  • Tell me about the industry trends you?re seeing, and predict how it may change.
  • Tell me about your favourite tactic/technique and the benefits it provides.
  • Tell me about your most interesting clients, and how you helped them, before and after.
  • Tell me your biggest challenges, and how they relate to your customers and clients.
  • Tell me your story? why you do what you do?

Not only are Gary?s ideas great for generating social media content, they?re also great ways of coming up with email content too.

Interestingly, Gary says (on page 72) the best business tweet of all time is ?What Can I do for you.?

I say ?interestingly? because I?ve found that one of the best emails you can ever send your prospects is?

?Tell me your #1 biggest challenge?, or words to that effect. More or less the same question.

On page 74 of Crush It! he also gives us an insight into how he started pre-selling his book, which got to #1 on the Amazon Best Seller list for Web Marketing books within the first few weeks of its release?

  1. He posted an announcement video on his blog about the book and why it meant so much to him.
  2. He gave links to buy his book on book retail websites.
  3. He asked his readers to pass his book on to their friends.
  4. He put a button on blog labelled ?Support Gary?s Book? ? which linked to a page thanking them for their interest.
  5. He gave them a ?Widget? they could add to their own website or blog.

And more. (Again, read the book for the full list. Just a brief summary here.)

However, one thing he said which ? for me ? raised a ?warning flag? was on page 80, where he says?

?Analytics are not important for social media.?

Now I?m a huge advocate of tracking and testing everything we do to market and promote our businesses.

So, to spend a lot of time on social media marketing and yet deliberately not track it all seems like a dangerous activity.

However, I do understand why he says that statistics and analytics can ?mislead and prevent you from ever gaining foothold? where social media is concerned.

To borrow a line from The Shawshank Redemption, I know that all it takes to get traction with social media marketing is ?pressure, and time.?

However, just for record, the advice on ?not tracking stats? should very much not be applied to standard direct e-marketing, using tactics like e-mail marketing, lead pages, pay per click and so on.

In fact, not tracking your statistics with non-social media marketing is one of the fastest ways to lose your shirt ? I?ve seen people lose a fortune in PPC for example, simply because they weren?t tracking it carefully enough.

Anyway, back to the book.

On page 99 Gary says?

?The ultimate goal of social media is to get people on to your blog.?

? and that you need to place ?calls to action? on your blog to ?capture? people when they visit.

Now I?ve talked about this in all three of my books.

Capturing visitors is super-critical, if you want to optimize what the Internet does for your business.

Some of the calls to action Gary lists include?

  • Allow people to subscribe (opt-in) to your email newsletter.
  • Asking people to ?Follow? you on Twitter.
  • Asking people to join your ?Fan Page? on Facebook.
  • Asking people to ?Share? content on Facebook, MySpace, etc.
  • Having a ?Tweet This? button for blog posts and other content.
  • Having an ?Email This? button.

And Gary also recommends this page for a comprehensive list of social media tools and resources, and also the following blogs?

And here?s a really interesting piece of advice from page 95?

?Creating content should be the least time-consuming part of the whole endeavour ? creating community is where the bulk of your hustle should go.?? (n.b. the bolding is my own.)

That?s something I know I?ve got wrong in the past ? I?ve spent a lot of time over the years on creating content, and not enough time getting leverage on said content, so that?s salient advice indeed.

Finally, here?s a list of all the steps he recommends, based on the list he gives on page 135?

1. Identify your core passion. (But see my comment below about this)

2. Make sure you can come up with a list of at least fifty excellent blog topics on the subject.

3. You must be able to answer Yes to the following two questions (1) Am I sure my passion is what I think it is? And, (2) Can I talk about it in a more authoritative and compelling way than anyone else?

4. Name your personal brand.

5. Buy your own name as a web address (domain) in .com and .tv (Gary recommends going for firstnamesurname if possible ? like EdRivis.com for example. I use KnowEm.com to show my clients where their name is still available. It?s a great tool and the basic functionality is free.

6. Choose a format (medium) that suits your personal style (audio, video or written). Gary favours video.

7. Start a WordPress or Tumblr account (personally I have both ? cover your bases)

8. Hire a designer (I?d add that your need to be choosy and hire a great designer so your websites look truly professional.)

9. Include a Facebook Connect link, Call-to-Action buttons, Share functions, and a button that invites people to do business with you in a prominent place on your blog (p135)

10. Create a facebook fan page (he recommends not using standard profile page ? if have one put a link on that to Fan page)

11. Sign up for an automatic distribution service: If you?re mainly going to be posting written content then sign up for a Ping.FM account. Or if video?s your thing then sign up for a TubeMogul account.

12. Post your content.

13. Start creating a community by commenting on other people?s blogs and forums and replying to comments to your own blog posts.

14. Use Twitter Search (Search.Twitter) to find as many people as possible talking about your topic, and communicate with them.

15. Use BlogSearch.Google.com to find more blogs that are relevant to your subject

16. Join as many active Facebook fan pages and groups relating to your topic possible.

17. ?Repeat steps 12 through 16 over and over and over and over and over!? [I've left that quote intact - exactly as Gary says it in the book. I get the feeling he wants us to repeat this process?]

18. Do it again?

19. And again?? [Yes, he definitely wants us to repeat the process!]

20. When you feel your personal brand has gained sufficient attention and stickiness, start reaching out to advertisers and monetizing ? although he does mention selling your own products if you have any (his books targeted at a wide range of people ? not just business owners.)

These are for me some of the highlights of Gary?s book.

I highly recommend you read it a.s.a.p.

Just one thing to bear in mind ? the target audience for Gary?s book is ?anyone?.

So, his advice on things like ?finding your passion? hopefully probably don?t apply to you, because given that you?re a business owner, you?re hopefully already ?following your passion? in your everyday work?

Anyway, hope you found this useful?

Leave a comment below and let me know what you think ? not only about this review ? but also, Gary?s book if you read it. What were your highlights?

And best of luck with your social media marketing. It?s certainly something I?ll be focusing on more in future, starting by making my social media icons more prominent on this blog.

All my best,
Ed
Ed Rivis.

AMMON by H. B. Moore ? LDS Women's Book Review

AMMON

Author: H. B. Moore

Published Date: June 2011

Publisher: Covenant Communications

Softcover: 288 pages

Genre: Historical Fiction

FTC FYI: LDSWBR received free review copies that did not affect our review

Shanda?s Review

AMMON is the latest installment of H. B. Moore?s historical novels based on the Book of Mormon. I?ve read each book, from?Out of Jerusalem to?ABINADI to?AMMON. Every time I think ?It doesn?t get better than this,? Heather proves me wrong.

AMMON is the story of the eldest son of Mosiah. He and his 3 brothers renounce the throne and take separate paths into Lamanite territory to preach the gospel of Christ. Ammon is captured close to the border and taken to King Lamoni, but not before he sees Elena, a woman of Nephite heritage living with her family in the land of Ishmael.

Most people remember Ammon as the man who smote the arms off of the Lamanite rebels who scattered the king?s flocks at the waters of Sebus. Thanks to Heather, I will remember Ammon as so much more than that. Though some people balk at reading fictional retellings of factual accounts, I enjoy reading them because, though I know the fictional aspects of the story are the author?s creation, the perspective I gain from exploring the depths of these people?s stories makes them even more real to me.

For example, Ammon?s reaction, both physical and emotional, after the events at the waters of Sebus was something I had never really thought about. Nor had I considered the magnitude of Ammon and his brothers? sacrifice in giving up the throne and a life of wealth and ease to travel through the wilderness to live among and serve their ?enemies.?

Heather?s retelling of Ammon?s story is enthralling, intense, and unforgettable. Her writing is clear and precise. I started reading the last half of AMMON during the late morning. I was so involved in the book that when my husband asked if I was hungry, I thought he meant for dinner (I was so caught up in the story I assumed I had read straight through lunch).

AMMON gets 5 stars from me. I highly recommend it to everyone.

Sheila?s Review

I loved reading the novel Ammon! Even though I know the story from the Book of Mormon, sometimes I feel like I am reading an action/adventure novel. I love Ammon because of his courage, his humility and his undying faith.

Heather has a way of bringing these Book of Mormon heroes to life, while still staying true to scripture. I also enjoy how Heather develops all of her characters, whether big or?small. I liked seeing the growth of the female character Elena. At the first she is a timid young girl and by the end she is a brave, confident?woman. This all happens because of Ammon, of course.

The scene that particularly gave me chills is when Ammon spoke to King Lamoni and he collapses in his chambers. It is so inspiring to see?the faith of his wife. There is so much for us to compare our lives to those of the Book of Mormon people. We can see how easy it is to be?led astray. It is so frightening to see how easy it was for Zaman to be turned to evil.

Heather is one of my favorite authors. She knows how to take an already known story and make it seem like new. I am always so impressed at how thorough she is in her research. I also can tell you, if you have never read an H.B. Moore book, be ready to schedule out some time. It is hard to put the book down once you start. Her writing has such a nice flow; you become so immersed into the story you forget that you are reading a book.

Ammon is now my favorite book out of all of the books Heather has written. I gave Ammon 5 stars and it truly deserved it.

Mindy?s Review

Ammon is nothing short of amazing. This is the first book I have read by Heather Moore and I was really impressed. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Even though it is a fictional retelling of Ammon from the Book of Mormon, I was hooked. I knew Ammon?s history from the scriptures, but what I was reading was an intense adventure story, that just happen to have the men wearing kilts. Heather?s writing is so clean and smooth, it?s no wonder her books have won awards and they continue to set the example for great story-telling.

I have always enjoyed reading Ammon?s journey to the Lamanite people in the scriptures. I picture him very brave, selfless, and strong. After leaving his brothers and friends to go their separate ways, Ammon finds himself in the land of Ishmael. He is sneaking around trying not to get caught when he spies Elena, a beautiful girl who has lighter skin than the Lamanites. Ammon is seen, bound and taken to the King.

Elena is the daughter of Moriah and the sister of Zaman. Many years ago, they fled Zarahemla to not be forced into religion. Moriah makes capes and ceremonial clothes for the king, and Elena is practicing her skills in dress making. Elena has caught the eye of Gad, the blacksmith. Gad is a widower who has his sight set on Elena to be his bride. Elena keeps herself hidden; she is ashamed of her fair Nephite skin. Her family has worked hard to establish a name for themselves away from their Nephite roots. Zaman isn?t sure what to think of Ammon. Why would a stranger come to their land wanting to be a servant? Ammon is sent to the blacksmith and quickly finds friends and allies. He keeps asking the Lord when the right time is to teach these people, but learns he must be patient.

I really enjoyed how the story went from a ?Book of Mormon story,? to a non-stop action suspense thriller. Something I?ve never thought of during Ammon?s ordeal was how he may have felt. Especially when he hurt and killed the men protecting King Lamoni?s flocks. The author did a fantastic job of telling us what Ammon might have been feeling, and I felt his relationship with the Lord.

5 stars. A solid book. The writing is very well done, the characters enjoyable, and the action had my stomach in nervous knots. This book is part of a series, but can be a stand alone. I look forward to reading Abinadi, Alma, and Alma the Younger.

FTC FYI- I borrowed Sheila?s copy.
