ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? When Honduran-born Antonella Cecilia Packard converted to the Mormon Faith 20 years ago, she said it was like “coming home.”

The Catholic-educated Packard, who grew up in “the middle of Mayan ruins,” appreciated the faith’s strong sense of family and conservative values. She also saw her own history in the Book of Mormon with stories of migrations, tragedies and triumphs of a people many Mormons believe are the ancestors of some present-day Latinos.

But two decades after her conversion while a college student at Mississippi State, the 43-year-old Packard finds herself on a new mission: defeating Mitt Romney and any Mormon politician who betrays what she sees as a basic Mormon principle of protecting immigrants.

As Romney continues to seek the Republican presidential nomination while rarely discussing his faith, a growing number of vocal Hispanic Mormons say they intend to use Mormon teachings as a reason to convince others not to vote for him. They have held firesides (equivalent to a tent revival) on immigration, protested outside of Romney campaign events and have traveled across state lines to help defeat other Mormon politicians with similar harsh immigration stances.

“Yes, we are happy that we have a Mormon running for president,” said Packard, a Saratoga Springs, Utah, resident and member of Somos (We are) Republicans. “But a lot of us aren’t supporting him because of his stance against immigrants.”

While stressing the Mormon faith’s historic connection to converting immigrants, Latino Mormons point directly to immigration stories in the Book of Mormon and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ recent statements against policies targeting immigrants. They also view Romney’s stance against proposals giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship as hypocritical since Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, who had five wives and 30 children, sought refuge in Mexico after passage of an 1882 law that barred polygamy.

“We view immigration as a God event,” said Ignacio Garcia, a history professor at Brigham Young University and a Sunday school teacher at his Mormon ward. “The book says no one comes to the Land unless they are brought by God.”

Those stories in the Book of Mormon, Garcia said, give Hispanic Mormons a powerful religious argument to use, especially since most believe they are descendants of the Lamanites, an indigenous group in the Americas described in the Mormon sacred text. According to the Book of Mormon, the Lamanites lived in the present-day American Southwest, traveled south and face years of hardship, and are prophesized to eventually return to the Promised Land.

In addition, Garcia said the recent political moves by Hispanic Mormons are gaining attention because Hispanics are the fastest growing group among the LDS faith in the U.S.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not keep ethnic data on its 6 million or so members. But according to a 2011 national survey of Mormons by Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, Latinos make up 7 percent of Mormons in the U.S.

The church says the number of Spanish-speaking units has grown from 403 in 2001 to nearly 800 last year.

Garcia said it is estimated that nearly 70 percent of Latino Mormons are illegal immigrants. He said the church has responded by hiring members whose sole jobs are to transport some Latino missionaries from state to state because they can’t fly due to their immigration status.

And last year, at least two Spanish-speaking LDS branch presidents were arrested and deported, highlighting the plight of immigrants within the faith.

Packard said those high profile deportations and the influx of new Hispanic members within the church helped with the recent passage of immigration bills in Utah that included an enforcement law modeled on Arizona’s but balanced by a program that allows illegal immigrants to work and pay taxes in Utah if they register with the state.

Packard said she also was motivated to travel to Phoenix to campaign against the recently defeated former Arizona Sen. Russell Pearce, who authored Arizona’s much debated immigration law. She and others also have helped organized other Latino Republicans to speak out against Romney.

Pablo Felix, a Spanish-speaking bishop of the Liahona Second Ward in Mesa, Ariz., was reluctant to criticize Romney but said the immigration stories in the Book of Mormon are powerful and one of the many factors that draw Latinos to the church and act on behalf of the faith.

Felix said he cannot be sure about his congregation, but he suspects some 60 to 70 percent of the members could be here illegally.

But Hispanic Mormons may have limited influence in Arizona’s upcoming GOP primary and the general election this year. Garcia said that’s because most are illegal immigrants and can’t vote. Those who can, he said, lean toward moderate Democratic candidates.

Background Info: The year is 2015. Not much changed since the year you live in now. The world isn’t superfuturistic, there aren’t laserguns, hovercars, nanosuits, no. It’s a normal old society save for the metropolis known as ?????. If the city name is blacked out, you probably don’t have clearance to it’s name. Since 1945 S.C.E.S.S has been serving the nation fiercely. Whether it be their secret capture of Adolf Hitler and the ending of World War Two, or the prevention of nuclear war in the Cold War, they’ve done a great service for the country. Some of the things they’ve undergone are indeed borderline paranormal and conspiracy worthy, including the Roswell incident, otherwise known as Task-25(Procurement of Unidentified Flying Object), and the spiritual decontamination of several homesteads. Some of their tasks are simple search and seizures, others are assassinations. They’re like a special forces unit without rules of engagement or procedural restrictions, and nearly unlimited funding. Only the best of the best are recruited into SCESS.

Current Situation: As explained above the current situation, Task-397, a chemical engineer named Mr. Michael ?????? fabricated an extremely deadly substance. Mr. ??????’s substance is an airborn neurotoxin, aero-neurotoxin, that has a 100% fatality rate. Within ten seconds of inhalation it completely destroys conscious thought by latching onto neurons in the brain and completely destroying them. It only effects the frontal lobe, the bodies core functions are still capable of doing their jobs. Complete information on the aero-neurotoxin below.

Information for you: There are ten main characters in this roleplay as of now. Nine of them will be for you guys, and one of them is mine. Ghost, the leader of Task-397, is my character. Nine of you, or less depending on how many characters you want to have(no more than three), will control the rest. More characters may be added or removed at my discretion. Mind you this roleplay is not centered around Task-397, it is centered around SCESS. After completion of task-397(which may or may not happen), another task will be at hand, or multiple. The possibilities are open ended and I’m open to suggestions.

How to apply: All you have to do is provide me with character info. I want your characters name, age, gender, physical appearance, personality, what he or she will offer to the squadron, his or her specialties, and their notable accomplishments. I want your characters to be convincing. I don’t want them randomly thrown together, and I most certainly do NOT want you to use an anime picture. This is one thing that makes me cringe more than putting a toenail under my big toe and kicking a wall. I’ll leave you to design your own character template. I don’t want characters to be set in stone though, if you want to, change them as the story progresses. I encourage it!

Where the roleplay will pick up at: Our characters will just meet up in the cafeteria. It will most definitely start before all ten characters are accounted for, that’s fine, the others will simply be deemed as not on-sight at the base and still on their own individual tasks. I just don’t want to have to wait for all ten characters if they don’t come pouring in fast.

you may have noticed that this is very, very, very loosely similar to the SCP creepypasta series. Indeed it was inspired by that very series, but I have not based the roleplay on that series. This is an original idea I have created. At least, as far as I know it’s original. There’s probably something out there like it somewhere.

GENEVA (AP) ? The tidy Swiss want to clean up space.

Swiss scientists said Wednesday they plan to launch a “janitor satellite” specially designed to get rid of space junk, the orbiting debris that can do serious and costly damage to valuable satellites or even manned space ships.

The 10-million-franc ($11-million) satellite called CleanSpace One ? the prototype for a family of such satellites ? is being built by the Swiss Space Center at the Swiss Federal Institute for Technology in Lausanne, or EPFL.

Its launch would come within three to five years and its first tasks will be to grab two Swiss satellites that were launched in 2009 and 2010 but will be phased out of use, EPFL said.

The U.S. space agency NASA says over 500,000 pieces of spent rocket stages, broken satellites and other debris are orbiting Earth. The debris travels at speeds approaching 17,500 miles per hour (28,000 kilometers per hour), fast enough to destroy or inflict expensive and time-draining damage on a satellite or spacecraft. Collisions, in turn, generate more fragments floating in space.

Space junk has collided with satellites at least twice: In 1996, a French satellite was damaged by a rocket fragment, and in 2009, a satellite owned by U.S.-based Iridium Communications was destroyed in a collision with a derelict Russian satellite.

“It has become essential to be aware of the existence of this debris and the risks that are run by its proliferation,” said Claude Nicollier, an astronaut and EPFL professor.

Building the satellite means developing new technology to address three big problems, scientists say.

The first hurdle has to do with trajectory: The satellite has to be able to adjust its path to match that of its target. EPFL said its labs are looking into a new ultra-compact motor that can do this.

Next, the satellite has to be able to grab hold of and stabilize the debris at high speeds. Scientists are studying how plants and animals grip things as a model for what would be used.

And, finally, CleanSpace One then has to be able to guide the debris, or unwanted satellites, back into Earth’s atmosphere, where both the Swiss-made satellite and the floating garbage it collects would burn on re-entry.

The Swiss Space Center’s director, Volker Gass, said it hopes to someday “offer and sell a whole family of ready-made systems, designed as sustainably as possible, that are able to de-orbit several different kinds of satellites.”

It remains to be seen how cost-effective the satellites are since each one would be destroyed after its mission, but governments might provide some funding if governments agree to rules to limit debris.

In 2007, China purposely destroyed one of its own satellites with a missile in a test, putting an estimated 150,000 smaller pieces of debris into space and 3,000 big enough to be tracked by radar on the ground.

More recently, Russia’s $170 million planned Mars moon probe got stranded in Earth’s orbit after its Nov. 9 launch. Efforts by Russian and European Space Agency experts to bring it back to life failed. It was one of the heaviest and most toxic pieces of space junk ever to crash to Earth.

There have been no reports of anyone ever being hit by it on Earth, but the problem it poses has slowly gained traction in political circles in the decades since the space age began more than a half-century ago.

The European Union has proposed its own draft rules for operating in space and the United States views that document as a starting point.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton warned last month of the space environment is threatened by space junk, and said the U.S. will hold talks with the EU to set informal rules aimed at limiting debris.
